Henry L. Gantt, a very well known American engineer was the one who developed Gantt chart. Gantt chart is very helpful in processes which may include loading, scheduling, dispatching and also progressing. The chart is usually drawn on a ruled or a printed sheet or sometimes it may be drawn in a ruled board. Nowadays a large number of Gantt charts have come into existence but only a few of them are considered to be reliable. The most commonly used Gantt charts from the available list are load chart and the schedule chart.

The chart is formed with the help of a simple grid, which is formed by a series of horizontal and vertical lines. The vertical lines are the ones which divide the horizontal lines into small squares. These small squares represent units of measurement, which may be days, weeks or months. The horizontal lines are the ones which divide the vertical lines into sections, which are used to represent job schedule or the load chart. Gantt chart is drawn for showing at a glance, the scheduling of various operations involved in a job at. Gantt charts are also capable of showing work head of each of the machine or the work centre with respect to time (days or weeks). A load chart is responsible for displaying the loading and the idle times whereas a schedule chart monitors the progress of the job.
