Should military training be made compulsory for all?

It has been argued by many that compulsory military training could help the young adults by keeping them out of trouble and also teach them respect for authority and discipline. In this regard, it has also been argued that in the current times of great uncertainty, a standing army could be helpful for any country which can be called in case of emergency. On the other hand, the opponents of compulsory military training argue that it could result in an unfair treatment of contentious objectors and it also costs a long and is also difficult to implement.

Should we ban or promote Arranged Marriage?

Arrange marriages have been conducted in large numbers in human history but now they have become unusual in the Western world. However overt arranged marriages still take place in Europe and America but mainly within the immigrant communities. This further complicates the issue as the debate over arranged marriage gets caught up in discussion on ethnic rights and racism as well as in the larger issue of immigration. For example Britain gives entry clearance to a large number of spouses of British Asians out of whom, a large proportion were the result of marriages in which there was at least some measure of arrangement.

Is the assassination of a dictator justified?

Background: Assassination is generally is defined as the targeted killing of an individual due to political reasons during peace time. It can be undertaken by the agents of another state or the individual citizens and takes place without any legal process. Historically the issue of assassination was considered in context of dictators like Hitler and Stalin but it gained attention again when leaders like Saddam Hussain and Slobodan Milosevic threatened international peace. The debate became heated with the recent US air strikes aimed at killing Saddam Hussain, Osama bin Laden and Muammar Qaddafi.

Should Anorexics be force fed?

Background: Anorexia Nervosa has been defined as a self-inflicted starvation due to which the body weight of an individual becomes less than 15 percent of what is expected from the individuals of same sex and height. In UK as well as in several other western countries it has been classified has a mental illness. Anorexia is particularly associated with body image and woman as only one out of ten sufferers is male. The unrealistic portrayal of the female body by the media makes it worse and the mortality rate is between 5 to 18 percent. Anorexia has been found in patients from the age of 6 to 76 years and is found more commonly in the developed countries where it affects 1 percent of the female adolescents. The patients of anorexia become dangerously thin and some time they are force fed using a naso-gastric tube (through the nose). Under normal circumstances medical treatment is not administer without obtaining the consent of the patient but in case of patients who are mentally ill, the distorted perception of reality can render than unable in making a choice. However issues like medical ethics and human rights raised serious questions regarding such treatment.

Should Criminal Trials Be Telecast?

It has been argued by many that apart from the trials where restrictions have been imposed on the presence of audience due to concerns of national security or the welfare of children, other criminal trials should be telecast on television.
